Speak, Memory is pretty amazing, so I might leave that on the list. Some, like This Boy's Life, read like novels, with very little Voice of Experience or “story” in Gornick's sense. Wolff pulls together the story of his childhood in a memoir that charms without being charming. In our class discussion about the memoir This Boy's Life, I found out valuable information about certain allusions, themes, character relationships, and symbols/motifs. This Boy's Life is great, as is The Duke of Deception, his brother Geoffrey's memoir. "The Duke of Deception," by Geoffrey Wolff. Some of the characteristics of memoir include: It's a true story, derived from the memory of the author (bearing in mind that memory can be faulty). The four best memoirs I have ever read, and I have read too many, are Frank McCort's, Angela's Ashes, “Tobias Wolff's, “This Boy's Life,” Geoffrey Wolff's, “The Duke of Deception,” and Jeanette Walls, “The Glass Castle.”. By that I mean exactly how many times Wolff used his “creative license. Granted, it's the story of a broken home, a sympathetic and easily-misled mother, and a rebellious and misdirected adolescent, but it's still just the story of one boy growing up. This Boy's Life is really well considered. Memoirs vary greatly in how much reflection they have. He writes honestly and plainly about his youth – a time of making poor choices and learning from very few of them. I've included it because I wanted to call attention to some exceptional family centered memoirs such as Stitches, The Glass Castle, and This Boy's Life. The memoirs that endure from that period are the ones that look back with love and forgiveness. Description: Fiction writer Tobias Wolff electrified critics with his scarifying 1989 memoir, which many deemed as notable for its artful structure and finely wrought prose as for the events it describes. They don't even necessarily have to be true. As Tobias Wolff says in This Boy's Life (taken from Writing Life Stories):. "A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Mooreland, "This Boy's Life," by Tobias Wolff. Yagoda talks about his audacious chronicle of the memoir, one that spans thousands of memoirs and hundreds of years—and manna for anyone obsessed by personal storytelling. This Boy's Life is just that: a boy's life. My main concern about Tobias Wolff's memoir This Boy's Life is how much of the memoir is actually true. If you are looking for a good memoir to read, here are a few of Nancy Pearl's suggestions.
