'After a rather drab existence in an English orphanage Linda Martin is appointed governess to the nine-year-old owner of the Chateau Valmy in the French Alps. As I wandered aimlessly through my teens I stumbled onto the Nancy Drew mysteries of Carolyn Keene, Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier, and Nine Coaches Waiting and other romantic tales by Mary Stewart. When she was 13, they were killed in an accident and she was sent to a London orphanage. Version I read: 2006 reprint by Chicago Review Press. Just recently I've managed to get my hands on a copy of Nine Coaches Waiting, which I've had on my list to read for many years. Linda Martin had a lovely childhood in France with her English father and French mother. This beautifully written book was originally published in the 1950's, but don't think it isn't worth the read because it's "old." Miss Linda Martin accepts a job as a governess for an orphaned boy in France. Book title: Nine Coaches Waiting. Product Details: Publisher: Various (1000). A STRANGER TERROR coiled in the shadows behind the brooding elegance of the huge chateau. All the quotes on the back that said Nine Coaches Waiting was like Rebecca. From Greece in The Moonspinners to France in Nine Coaches Waiting, Mary Stewart featured kick-butt heroines, sexy male leads, and a whole lot of mystery. And Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart is an all-time favorite of one of my student bookgroup members. Mary Stewart had cast her spell over me. And it totally is - beautiful/creepy old house, odd marriages, intrigue, love story - I loved this Gothic romance. Publisher and date published: William Morrow 1958. Mary Stewart has been a great influence on a number of authors I like to read and so I thought it was about time that I found out for myself what the fuss is all about! It lay there like some dark and twisted thing - waiting, watching, ready to strike. I really must add it to my pile! But my favorite still remains The Moonspinners.
